Designed in 1959 and inspired by the characteristic furniture typically found in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture, Børge Mogensen designed the Spanish Chair after a trip to Spain in 1958. True to the Danish design philosophy, he stripped back all intricate and ornate detail and focussed entirely on the necessary elements.

The combination of thick leather, strong stitching detail and solid oak frame with wide armrests gives the chair a very masculine quality while still appearing elegant.

The Spanish Chiar is closely related to an earlier chair design by Børge Mogensen – The Hunting Chair, designed in 1950 shares the same striking use of leather, stitching and oak frame with adjustable straps for the seat. Both chairs are considered design classics today and are still in production by Fredricia Furniture in Denmark.
